The Madonna del Soccorso

Among the folk traditions that take place in Sciacca, certainly the most important and most felt by all citizens, even by Saccensi who for one reason or another have had to leave Sciacca immigrating abroad, is the feast in honor of the Madonna del Soccorso patroness of the city of Sciacca.

The recurrence pattern occurs twice a year for the first time on 2 February, the second time on August 5.

It is therefore the main religious celebration of Sciacca. Historical accounts say that the statue of the Madonna was found at sea during a historical period that Sciacca recalls now with devotion. At that time Sciacca was in facing the plague but on February 1st 1626 the entire population began a pilgrimage "U vutu" from the Church of St. Augustine to the mother church.

The following day, then February 2nd , a large crowd of sailors barefoot carried on their shoulder the statue of the Madonna found at sea, in procession through the streets of the city.
Joints in the area of small Maestranza (today via Licata) from the sky sparkled a thunderbolt that struck the base of the base of the Madonna from which rose a smoke.
From that moment all saccensi were healed of the plague, which was eradicated from the city.

The gratitude of Sciacca, with the festivities in honor of the Madonna del Soccorso are held twice a year.
Surely it is the second, which takes place in summer, you see the devotion of Sciacca in its entirety, taking into account that in this occasion more than in the first one has a high participation of Sciacca devotees who take advantage of the summer and holidays, to travel to Sciacca from everywhere, in fact the Saccensi emigrated take advantage of summer seasons and come to participate in the procession that evolves the streets of the city centre.

Today The statue as tradition is carried by fishermen barefoot and twice she is turned towards the sea, both to avert the danger of flooding, tsunamis and similar misfortunes and to thank the place where the statue was miraculously found.
